Argentina's central bank slashed its benchmark interest rate to 80% from 100% previously, the monetary authority said in a statement on Monday. The decisions came amid a slowdown in the monthly inflation rate while strengthening the peso against the US dollar. The monthly inflation rate in Argentina eased to 20.6% in January of 2024 from 25.5% in the previous month and slightly below market forecasts of 21%. On a yearly basis, however, inflation accelerated to 254.2% in January from 211.4% in December 2023. Argentina’s statistics agency is due to publish February inflation figures on Tuesday. Since President Javier Milei’s inauguration on Dec. 10, Central Bank President Santiago Bausili has bought up USD 9.6 billion in the country’s currency market to help restore the cash stockpile it needs to stabilize the peso, according to the bank’s statement.
