US consumer prices rose 0.3% month-over-month in September 2025, easing slightly from August’s 0.4% gain and just below expectations of 0.4%. Energy costs climbed 1.5%, led by a 4.1% surge in gasoline, while food prices increased 0.2%. Additional upward pressure came from shelter, airline fares, recreation, household goods, and apparel. These gains were partly offset by lower motor vehicle insurance, used car, and communication prices. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, rose 0.2%, just below August's pace and slightly below forecasts of 0.3%.
