Una bilancia commerciale positiva indica un surplus commerciale mentre una bilancia commerciale negativa indica un deficit commerciale. Il BOT è una componente importante nel determinare il conto corrente di un paese.

Brazil recorded a trade surplus of $2.837 billion in February of 2023, below market expectations of $3.099 billion. Exports fell by 7.7% from a year earlier to $ 20.56 billion, led by goods from the extractive industry (-38.2% to $3.57 billion) and agricultural goods (-5% to $4.45 billion). On the other hand, exports rose for goods in transformation industries (5.7% to $12.38 billion). Exports declined to China, Hong Kong and Macau (-14%) and the European Union (-12.6%) while those to Argentina (34.6%) and the United States (1.8%) rose. Meanwhile, imports went down 0.9% to $17.72 billion, mainly due to lower purchases of goods in extractive industries (-29.1% to $1.28 billion). On the other hand, imports increased in transformation industries (2.1% to $15.9 billion) and agricultural industries (3.5% to $0.39 billion). Purchases fell from the United States (-15%) and China, Hong Kong and Macau (-13.9%), but rose from Argentina (25.8%) and the European Union (19.6%).
